Carved Fireplace Bellows
In an 18th and 19th century home, where the only source of heat was the fireplace. They were an essential tool to quickly start a fire. The material I used for this pair is walnut for the front and back boards. I also used black leather for the air bag and woven leather hinge along with brass tacks to hold the leather in place and I made a brass spout to direct the air. Furthermore the front board is decorated with a combination of turning and carving. Noteworthy is the stylized motif found on the middle ring. I embellished the valve on the back of the bellows with incised turnings around the inlet hole. I made a one way valve of leather and wood inside the inlet hole. And finally I lightly stained the front and back walnut boards and finished them with shellac.

Fireplace Bellows
In an 18th century home, where the only source of heat was the fireplace, they were an essential tool to quickly start a fire. I made this pair from Walnut and has a simple turned pattern on the front board. I made the spout from sheet iron which was worked around a wooden form and then riveted together. Another detail is the black leather that I used with iron tacks to hold the leather in place and finally the walnut front and back boards are finished with a shellac finish.
