Carved Oak Box

This is a reproduction of a common box from the late 17th century with simple rabbeted corners, pinned with oak pegs.  The bottom board is white pine with an incised pattern cut into the beveled edge and it also has an applied molding.  Symmetrical tulips are carved on the front board with a stippled background.  The one piece oak lid repeats the incised pattern that is on the bottom board.  A handmade lock and hasp with snipe hinges finish off the box.

Carved Walnut box

Simple construction is common on these 17th century boxes, rabbeted corners secured with wooden pegs, nailed on single width bottom board and snipe hinges to connect the one pice lid.  The lunette carving pattern comes from a group of boxes from Braintree, Massachusetts.  A handmade lock and hasp finish off this box.

The interior is lined in a soldier blue wool fabric. The exterior is covered with dark brown/black hair-on cow skin.  All the edges are trimmed in a leather gimp tacked on with brass tacks.  As commonly seen on original boxes, the top handle of this box is an iron bail.  The hinges are wire wound and the lock is copy of a trunk lock, both made in my shop.

This candle box is made from Pennsylvania walnut and features hand cut dovetailed joinery.  The box can be hung on the wall or placed flat on a table and is used to store candles and tapers.  I stained this box with a walnut stain and finished with a hand rubbed oil blend to bring out the grain of the wood.

Desk Box  (slant top)

This is a  copy of a Desk box or often referred to as a Bible box.  The design dates from the early 18th century.  These boxes were meant to hold personal papers, writing materials or family bibles.  The thumb molded lid is held on with iron butterfly hinges that are made in my shop.  The Box is made from hand planed poplar wood and the sides are joined to the front and back with dovetails.  The lid is secured to the box with one of my Bradford trunk locks.  This box is painted a dark blue with a black wash over the blue base and coated with a oil/varnish blend.
